Cownose Ray
The cownose ray is found in the western Atlantic Ocean, and gets its name from their uniquely shaped head that resembles a cow’s snout from above.
Class: Chondrichthyes
Order: Myliobatiformes
Family: Rhinopteridae
Genus: Rhinoptera
Species: R. bonasus
Common Names: Cownose Ray
Cownose rays are usually found in shallow waters near the coast, in salty or brackish waters. They feed by foraging on the sandy floor and suctioning sediment into their mouths, filtering out the sand while using strong jaws to crack the shells of their invertebrate prey.
Sometimes, cownose rays will form large schools and go on long migrations. It’s not known exactly why they go on these migrations, but the schools can contain thousands of rays.
Cownose rays gather in shallow waters to mate. Pregnancy is thought to last around a year, and the young are born live, tail first. At birth, they can measure between 11 and 18 inches.
The cownose ray has a flattened body typical of rays, with distinctive long pointed fins and two “lobes” at the front of their head, that give them a cow-like appearance. A cownose ray’s “wingspan” can measure up to four feet, though there are some reports of them growing much larger. Their bodies are typically brownish above and white underneath.
They have long thin tails like most rays, and though they do possess a venomous stinger spine on the tail, they rarely use it. The ray’s mouth and gills are located on the underside of the body.
Cownose rays are common sights in public aquaria, often in “touch tanks” where they can be fed and touched by visitors. These rays often have their stingers trimmed for safety. The stingers will grow back over time.
Cownose rays are usually not aggressive and are not quick to use their stinger. If threatened or harassed, however, they can deliver a painful sting that may be fatal in certain situations.
Cownose rays are considered Vulnerable. Their population is in decline, largely due to overfishing.
