Wolverine
While many know Wolverine, the comic character, the true wolverine is a carnivorous mammal that is known to be quite ferocious. It’s the largest member of the weasel family and can be found primarily in the northern United States, Canada, Alaska, Russia, Siberia, and the Nordic European countries.
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Family: Mustelidae
Genus: Gulo
Species: G. gulo
Subspecies: American wolverine (G. g. luscus), Eurasian wolverine (G. g. gulo)
Common Name: Wolverine
Although wolverines are powerful predators, they are known to take advantage of carrion left by larger predators. They mostly prey on small to medium mammals but can take down larger prey. If needed, wolverines supplement their diet with eggs, larva, or plant material. A wolverine's main predators are wolves, bears, golden eagles, and occasionally cougars.
Wolverines roam over wide-ranging territories and can cover hundreds of miles in a few months. Females generally have a smaller range than males. Wolverines tend to avoid overlapping territories with others of the same sex.
Wolverines are solitary animals, but males will form attachments to one to two females. These attachments will last a lifetime, and males will visit their chosen females during the summer mating months. Father wolverines will occasionally visit offspring until they are weaned.
Following a successful mating, deep within a snow den (of 5 or more feet), a female wolverine will give birth to two to three young during early spring. While mating occurs during summer, the implantation of an embryo in the uterus is delayed until winter. After implantation, the gestation period is between 30-50 days.
Wolverines have oily, water-resistant, thick, and dark fur. They have long stocky bodies with short sturdy legs. Their heads are round with short snouts, small rounded ears, and small eyes. Wolverines have a bushy medium-length tail. Their paws are large with claws that help in navigating icy terrain. Wolverines range in size from 29-43 inches in length and are 15-61 pounds. Males are larger than females. This animal has scent glands with a strong odor for marking territory and signaling for mates.
Wolverine fur has been popular in cold regions due to its density and water-repelling abilities. Outdoorsman have used wolverine fur for lining in outerwear.
The ferocity of the wolverine makes this animal a common sports mascot for North American teams. Wolverines are popular characters in literature, folk tales, and even as a popular Marvel comic character.
Wolverines have a low population density and a wide-ranging habitat. They are listed as of Least Concern by IUCN, but their is a push by conservation groups to have them protected as endangered species. The need for large ranges puts wolverines in conflict with human developments, and with the need for deep snow for birthing dens, their habitats are threatened by climate change.
