Hyenas are very social creatures, living in large groups called “clans”. These clans can include as many as 80 hyenas. Females are the dominant members of the clan. Hyenas communicate using a range of sounds, including whoops, grunts, and various calls that sound similar to human laughter. This has given rise to the name “laughing hyena”.
Hyenas are typically scavengers, but the spotted hyena is a skilled hunter and predator. They typically prey on wildebeest, zebras and Thomson’s gazelles. They are even known to take down Cape buffalos, one of the most dangerous animals in Africa, and large animals like giraffes.
Spotted hyenas compete directly with lions, as they share the same savannah habitat. While spotted hyenas have a reputation for stealing food from lions, it is more often lions that steal the prey of hyenas.
Spotted hyena society is matriarchal, which means the females are the leaders. Males who wish to breed with a female will act very submissive and passive. Pregnancy lasts about 110 days, with most litters containing two cubs. The cubs are ready to hunt once they’re a year old.
The spotted hyena is the largest member of the hyena family, and is characterized by its muscular neck and shoulder muscles, with the backside and rear legs being less developed. They can grow up to 65 inches long and weight almost 150 pounds.
They have a sandy yellowish brown fur coat with dark brown spots. They have rounded ears and a short mane of fur along their necks, which is less prominent and defined than the mane of other hyena species. They have strong jaw muscles and a powerful bite, which helps them to crush bones.
Spotted hyenas were once found throughout Asia, Africa and Europe. These days, however, it is mostly found in sub-Saharan Africa, where it is quite common.
The spotted hyena has a long cultural history with humans, even being depicted in cave paintings by early humans in France. In many west African folk tales, hyenas symbolize negative habits and are seen as embodying abnormal, dirty traits. In east Africa, meanwhile, they are said to have brought warmth from the sun to the cold earth.
In Western depictions, spotted hyenas are often associated with cowardly, lowly behavior, going back all the way to Aristotle of Ancient Greece. They are still depicted in this manner at times in media, including the popular Disney Lion King franchise. However, the reality is that they are skilled and successful predators.
Spotted hyenas are a species of least concern, and there are believed to be between 25,000 and around 50,000 in the wild. However, habitat loss and poaching still present potential threats.
Spotted hyenas can be found in zoos, and sometimes are even kept as pets in some regions and trained to guard livestock or hunt game animals. While they can be tamed, they are not easy to house train, and can be very destructive, so they do not make ideal pets.
