Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Family: Canidae
Genus: Vulpes
Species: V. vulpes
Common Names: Red Fox
Red foxes have a varied, omnivorous diet that includes animals and plants. They may eat over 300 different species of animal, including rodents, birds, rabbits, porcupines, raccoons, reptiles, insects and other invertebrates, fish, and more.
Foxes are crepuscular, meaning they hunt in the early morning and evening hours. Their predators include lynxes, bobcats, mountain lions, and wolves.
Red foxes are known for the variety of noises they are capable of making. Adults make a dozen different sounds, and young foxes (kits) make eight. The calls include barking, whining, rattling cries (known as “gekkering”) and long drawn out screams, among others.
Red foxes mate in spring time. Pregnancy lasts around 50 days, and litters contain four to six kits. Mothers care for the young, while fathers will bring them food.
Red foxes are named for their usually reddish orange fur. Their bushy tails are white-tipped, and their legs are black. The undersides of their body, neck and face are white. There are many other color morphs, including “silver” (silvery blue or black), “platinum” (silvery white), and “smokey” (grayish brown with yellowish bands).
It is the largest of the foxes in the genus Vulpes, but still relatively small compared to other members of the canine family. Their bodies can measure up to three feet long, with the tail adding another 22 or so inches. They can weigh up to 30 pounds.
The word “fox” has roots in Old English, from a word meaning “bushy tail”. Foxes feature in a lot of folklore and mythology from many cultures, including European, Arab, and Native American and Indigenous North American tribes. In many of these tales, foxes are shown to be clever tricksters. Chinese mythology tells of the shapeshifting, nine-tailed fox spirit called huli jing. The kitsune of Japanese mythology and the kumiho spirit of Korea are similar creatures.
The red fox is a very widespread species across much of the world, found in almost all of Europe and Asia, as well as much of North America. It is a species of Least Concern. It has adapted to urban environments and can be found in suburbs and even cities.
