Pug
Pugs are a small breed of dog that originated in ancient China. They are known for their compact bodies, wrinkled features, and short curled tails.
Pugs are known for their agreeable temperament. Their charming personality makes them a very endearing breed to many, and their low level of aggression makes them a good dog for children in many cases.
Pugs have playful personalities and value companionship and socialization. They require lots of attention but respond with lots of affection.
Pregnancy for pugs lasts about 60 days. An average litter has four to six pups. Birthing is often done through caesarean section due to the large size of the pups’ skulls.
Modern pugs are compact, deep-chested dogs with squarish heads and short, well-muscled limbs. Their skin is wrinkled, especially on their face, and their tail is small and curly. The most common coats are fawn (cream-colored with darker brown or black in the ears and face) or black all over.
They grow to about 13 inches at the shoulder, and healthy pugs weigh between 14 and 18 pounds.
Pugs are an ancient breed originating in China, and have been around for almost 2,000 years. They were first brought to Europe in the 1500s, where they became very popular with the royal family.
In their homeland of China, they were bred to be pets for royalty including Emperors.
Older pugs were more slender and lean than their modern counterparts, but were still renowned for their affection and companionship.
Because of the pug’s flattened face, it is susceptible to common issues involving its eyes and breathing passageways. Nevertheless, pugs remain popular due to their good-natured personalities and gentle, playful disposition. In 2022, they were #35 on the most popular dog breeds in the United States, according to the American Kennel Club.
