Holstein cows are fairly easy-going in temperament. They are herd animals, preferring the company of other cows. They are a hardy cattle breed that is relatively easy to care for.
Holsteins are known for their piebald markings, which involve white and black splotches, or sometimes white and red splotches. They can weigh up to 1,700 pounds and stand over five feet tall at the shoulder.
The Holstein originates from the Netherlands and Germany, in a region known as Frisia, which is where the Holstein’s other name – Friesian –comes from. The breed is over 2,000 years old.
The name “Holstein” comes from the German state known as Schleswig-Holstein, which is one of the areas in Frisia where the breed originated.
Holsteins are known for their milk production. A single cow can produce an average of 22,000 pounds of milk per year. They are found in most countries throughout the world.
