Golden Retrievers were first bred in the 1800s in Scotland. The breed became increasingly popular after World War I, and began spreading all over the world.
Gerald Ford, the 38th president of the United States, had a Golden Retriever named Liberty.
In 2013, a Golden Retriever named Max was elected mayor of the town of Idyllwild, California. While a dog may seem like an odd choice for mayor, the unincorporated town actually did not have a local government, and the election was held for the benefit of a local animal rescue. All of the candidates were non-human.
