Herefords typically have a calm and docile temperament. They are bred to grow quickly. They are a hardy breed that can thrive in a wide range of climates and temperatures.
Herefords are usually reddish in coloration, with a white face and underside. Males can weigh as much as 1,800 pounds. They are a muscular breed, large with stocky features.
Herefords are named for Herefordshire, the county where the breed originated in the 1700s and 1800s. The cattle of Herefordshire were bred with other cattle such as Shorthorns to create a new breed that would provide quality beef.
They were first exported to the United States in the early 1800s.
There are currently around seven million Herefords in the world. They are found in more than 60 countries.
