The Arabian breed has long been kept in very close proximity to humans, and selectively breeding only the horses with a good-natured temperament has ensured that most Arabians are friendly, cooperative and intelligent.
However, they are also “hot-blooded” and known for being intolerant of harsh or harmful trainers.
Arabians have many unique characteristics among horse breeds, including a head that is wedge-shaped, with a wide forehead that tapers to a narrow muzzle. They are also known for their high tail carriage. They have long, arching necks and short backs (in fact, they usually have one fewer vertebrae than most other horse breeds).
They are noteworthy for their stamina, and are the dominant horse breed in endurance riding and long distance competitions.
Arabians are found in many coat colors, including bay (reddish brown with black points), gray, chestnut, black, and roan (mixed white and colored hairs on the body with solid-colored points). Many Arabians appear white, but they are technically considered “gray”, as they have black skin and white hairs, instead of the pink skin necessary to be classified genetically as a white horse.
The Arabian breed is one of the oldest horse breeds developed by humans. Horses with Arabian style features, including a tapered head and a high-carried tail, are depicted in ancient paintings from 3,500 years ago. Similar horses are shown in artwork from Ancient Egypt.
The breed is named for the Arabian Peninsula where it is thought to have originated. The horse that would eventually become the Arabian is thought to have been first tamed by the Bedouin nomads of the area.
Today, Arabians are widespread throughout the world. They are used primarily for competition and racing, especially endurance and distance racing, but are also used as personal riding and show horses.
