Persian Cat
Persians are instantly recognizable, with their flattened faces and longhair coats.
Genus Species – Felis catus
Common Names – Persian, Persian Longhair
Persians have a reputation for being quiet cats with a normally calm demeanor. They are usually friendly and affectionate, and adapt well to indoor living spaces like apartments.
Persian cats are known for their longhaired fur coats, and very short muzzles giving a “flat-faced” appearance.
The breed comes in a wide range of colors and patterns. They may be solid color, tabby patterned, calico (tri-colored), or Himalayan (bred by combining Persians with Siamese cats to create traditional Siamese markings on a longhaired Persian coat).
The origin of the long-haired Persian coat is a bit of a mystery. The breed is very old, and the first ancestors of the breed may have shown up in Europe in the 1600s from what is now Iran and Afghanistan.
Persian cats are frequently near the top of lists of most popular cat breeds, and have been for almost 30 years. Their easy-going, placid personalities make them popular companions, but their long coats require more maintenance than typical cat breeds.
