Bulldog litters average around four pups. Due to the size of the babies, most bulldog births require assistance from a veterinarian.
Bulldogs are instantly recognizable due to their compact, muscular bodies, wide heads, and short, flattened muzzle. Their lower jaw usually has a pronounced underbite, and their tails are short and often coiled. They can weigh up to 55 pounds.
The current English bulldog traces its roots back to the Old English bulldog. This breed was larger and less compact than the modern bulldog. It was used in a cruel sport called bull-baiting. Once this sport was made illegal in 1835, Old English bulldog breeding declined. A new type of bulldog was developed, with a smaller size and more traits that made it a better companion dog, with less aggression.
As of 2022, the bulldog ranks #6 on the American Kennel Club’s list of most popular dog breeds. Due to the specialized breeding that gives the bulldog its distinct appearance, it is prone to certain health issues.
