Velociraptor
This relatively small predatory dinosaur became massively popular after a larger, more monstrous version was featured as the star dinosaur of the Jurassic Park film franchise.
Clade: Dinosauria
Order: Saurischia
Clade: Theropoda
Family: Dromaeosauridae
Genus: Velociraptor (“Speedy thief”)
Species: V. mongoliensis, V. omolskae
Velociraptor was a meat-eating dinosaur that hunted its prey with the help of its enlarged hind claws. It was also believed to be quite fast and likely warm-blooded, as it needed energy to track and hunt down its prey. Dromaeosaurs like Velociraptor helped challenge the notion among scientists that all dinosaurs were slow-moving and cold-blooded.
A well-preserved fossil specimen features nearly intact skeletons of Velociraptor and Protoceratops, a plant-eater, locked in battle during their final moments of life. It is believed they may have been buried in sand. This fossil helped give scientists a clearer view of Velociraptor’s predatory behavior and how it may have hunted.
Velociraptor was a fairly small predatory dinosaur that walked on two legs. Like other dromaeosaurs, including its larger relative Deinonychus, it had a large, curved claw on both its hind feet, which it used to subdue prey. Somewhat unique among dromaeosaurids, Velociraptor’s skull was narrow and long, and slightly upturned.
While movies and outdated depictions showed Velociraptor as scaly, it is now accepted among scientists that Velociraptor was covered in feathers like modern birds. Ancestors of Velociraptor were known to have been feathered, with fossil evidence discovered, and Velociraptor had structures known as “quill knobs” on its bones, which are features associated with feathers in birds of today.
SIZE: 6 feet 9 inches (2.07 meters) in length (including tail)
WEIGHT: 33 pounds (15 kg)
Velociraptor lived in what is now Mongolia, in what is called the Djadochta Formation. It was thought to be an area with a dry, arid climate, featuring sand dunes and few bodies of water.
Other dinosaurs that shared Velociraptor's environment included the ceratopsian Protoceratops, the ankylosaur Pinacosaurus, and the oviraptorid Citipati.
Velociraptor was first discovered in 1923 by Peter Kaisen in the Mongolian Gobi Desert. It was described by Henry Fairfield Osborn in 1924. In1971, a team made up of Polish and Mongolian scientists discovered the now famous “Fighting Dinosaurs” skeletons, which featured Velociraptor locked in combat with Protoceratops at the time of their death.
Prior to 1993, Velociraptor’s larger American relative Deinonychus was more commonly featured in children’s books and toys. However, after Michael Crichton’s book Jurassic Park was made into a feature film by Steven Spielberg, Velociraptor was thrust into the spotlight. In the film, the Velociraptors (called “raptors”) are shown much larger than their actual size, and covered in scales (as the film predates discoveries of feathers on dromaeosaurs). They serve as the primary antagonists of the film, and have been featured in every subsequent movie in the franchise.
