Cryolophosaurus
Cryolophosaurus is a meat-eater from the early Jurassic Period, one of the few dinosaurs found in what is now Antarctica. It had a unique crest on its head.
Classification: Saurischia. Theropoda. Neotheropoda.
Genus: Cryolophosaurus (“Cold Crested Lizard”)
Species: C. ellioti
The purpose of Cryolophosaurus’s head crest was likely to attract mates or to intimidate potential rivals.
As a large meat eater, it was likely the top predator of its environment.
Cryolophosaurus was a two-legged meat-eating dinosaur. While its build was somewhat slender, it was one of the largest predators of its time (around 180 million years ago).
Its most unique feature was the strange crest over its eyes, a ruffled up-swept structure that resembled a pompadour hairstyle. This led to the dinosaur having the nickname “Elvisaurus” after the famous rock and roll musician.
LENGTH: Up to 7.7 meters (25 feet)
WEIGHT: 780 kg (1,720 pounds)
Cryolophosaurus lived in an environment that was far different than the cold and frigid Antarctica we know today. In the early Jurassic Period, Antarctica had forests along the coast that likely served as habitat for a diverse range of different species. Since it was closer to the Equator back then, it was much warmer than it is today, although it was still likely a cool, temperate climate.
Other animal species found in the same formation include several early sauropod (long-necked dinosaur) relatives, a flying pterosaur, and an early mammal relative.
Cryolophosaurus was discovered in 1994 in the Hanson Formation, on Mount Kirkpatrick in Antarctica. It was the second dinosaur discovered in Antarctica (after the armored ankylosaur Antarctopelta), and the first meat-eater discovered there.
It was excavated by paleontologist Dr. William Hammer, and the species name “ellioti” comes from geologist David Elliot, who assisted with the excavation.
