Malawisaurus
Malawisaurus was a long-necked sauropod dinosaur named after the area where its remains were found in Africa. It lived in the Early Cretaceous Period, specially the Aptian Age, between 125 and 113 million years ago.

Name Meaning – “Malawi (after Republic of Malawi in Africa)Lizard”
Malawisaurus was small for a sauropod, and thus its sheer size would probably not be enough to protect it from predators. Many other large sauropods, like modern day large animals such as whales and elephants, were likely considered too large for most predators to take on by themselves. Malawisaurus, being on the smaller end of the spectrum, is thought to have used to dermal ossicles or scutes on its body as a layer of added protection from predators in the area.
Malawisaurus was a titanosaur, a group of sauropods that were the last of the long-necked dinosaurs. Malawisaurus was a large animal at around 50 feet long, but was considered small for a sauropod dinosaur. Malawisaurus, like some other members of the titanosaur group, had dermal “ossicles” on its back, which were special enlarged scales that may have served as a kind of armored protection. It is one of the few titanosaurs with known skull material, and shows that at least some of this group had short skulls.
Length – 50 ft. (16 meters)
Weight – 11 tons (10 metric tons)
Malawisaurus was originally believed to be a species of Gigantosaurus, which is no longer considered a valid genus. It was originally described by Sydney H. Haughton in 1928, but was not renamed and re-described as a new species until 1993 by Louis L. Jacobs and his team. The remains of Malawisaurus are important in that they offer more complete material than many other African sauropod finds, including skull material which is quite rare.
