Kentrosaurus
Kentrosaurus was a relative of Stegosaurus with rows of spines down its back. It lived in the Jurassic Period around 150 million years ago.
Classification: Thyreophora, Stegosauridae.
Genus: Kentrosaurus (“Prickle Lizard”)
Species: K. aethiopicus
Kentrosaurus was a herbivore, meaning it ate plants. It didn’t chew its food much, preferring to swallow in large bites. They may have eaten low-growing fruit and other plants they could reach while on four legs, though it’s possible they may have reared up on their hind legs to gain access to higher plants.
Kentrosaurus’s tail was very flexible, and it is likely that it could be swung at high speeds. Swinging its spiked tail at an approaching predator could cause serious damage and help protect Kentrosaurus from becoming a meal.
Kentrosaurus was a four-legged plant-eater with a small head and muscular tail, not unlike its relative Stegosaurus. Kentrosaurus was smaller and more lightly built than its cousin, but still well-armored. Down the front half of its back was a row of narrow, pointed plates. Along the rear half of its body and down its tail, these plates became long spines. It also had a long spike protruding from each shoulder.
Length: 4.5 m (15 ft).
Weight: 1,600 kg (3,500 lbs)
Kentrosaurus was found in what is now Tanzania, in East Africa. It was a coastal environment with tidal flats, as well as inland areas with abundant vegetation. Kentrosaurus coexisted with other dinosaurs including long-necked Giraffatitan (a relative of Brachiosaurus), Dicraeosaurus and others, as well as meat-eating dinosaurs similar to Allosaurus and Ceratosaurus.
Kentrosaurus was first discovered by a German expedition to the Tendaguru Formation in 1909. It was formally described in 1915.
Many later Kentrosaurus remains were unfortunately destroyed during World War II.
