Suchomimus(Su-ko-mie-mus), Crocodile Mimic, lived in the Early Cretaceous of Africa. It is a close relative of the English Baryonyx. It shared with a diverse fauna of crocodyliformes, low diversity of dinosaurs with sauropods the most common plant eaters and a few large ornithischians. There were at least two other large theropods.
Genera and Species
Classification: Theropoda, Spinosauridae
Species: S. tenerensis
Suchomimuswas characterized by a long, narrow and low snout that has redefined the shape of the spinosaurid skull in general. The jaws are studded with some 100 teeth, not very sharp and curving slightly backward. The tip of the snout was enlarged and carried a "rosette" of longer teeth. The back bones have high spines consistent with a sail, but it is very much lower than that of Spinosaurus itself and the highest point over the hips. There is a small crest over the eyes.
Length 11 m (36 ft).
Weight 1.2 tons
It has the teeth of a fish eater. The adults were large enough to hunt iguanodonts and scavenge. It would have shared the water with the giant crocodyliforme Sarcosuchus and may have competed for food with it.
History of Discovery
Discovered by Sereno, Beck, Dutheil, Gado, Larsson, Lyon, Marcot, Rauhut, Sadleir, Sidor, Varricchio, Wilson and Wilson, in 1998. It is known from a partial skull, teeth, and almost complete skeleton.
Found in Africa (Niger) in coastal river delta.
