The son of Daedalus, an Athenian architect,Icarusfell into the sea for flying too close to the sun.
After Daedelus assisted in Theseus’s murder of theMinotaur, the King of Crete, Minos, imprisoned both Daedalus and his son, Icarus.
Too clever to remain a prisoner, Daedalus made wings for himself and Icarus out of feathers and wax. Before the two took off, to fly over the sea and away from the island, Daedalus advisedIcarusto fly neither too close to the sea nor too close to the sun.
Giddy with the sensation of flight, however, Icarus kept climbing higher and higher. Before he realized what he had done, he had flown so high that the sun had melted the wax in his wings.
