Scientific & Common Names

The scientific name for this breed of dog is "Canis lupus familiaris." The German Shepherd Dog is also known simply as German Shepherd, or GSD.

The German Shepherd Dog is a larger breed of dog. He stands between 22 and 26 inches tall at his shoulder. The GSD is longer than he is tall. The GSD's coat is a double coat of medium length. This coat typically has a black saddle with a body ranging from fawn to chocolate brown. While pure white or pure black colorings are possible in this breed, they are rare. The GSD has tall, pointed ears and a pointed, elongated snout. A long tail and long legs complete the GSD's body makeup.

There are many reputable breeders that are dedicated to preserving the dignity and history of the breed. Pure-bred GSDs may also be found at most animal shelters and canine rescues, due to the popularity of the breed.

The German Shepherd Dog is very pack-oriented but needs a strong leader to take charge. This dog is very intelligent and learns quickly. He is also fiercely loyal and protective of his pack, so caution should be used when introducing him to new people or animals. The German Shepherd Dog also has a lot of energy and should have a large, fenced yard in which to exercise. Barring this, the GSD should be walked at least twice per day for a good length of time. The German Shepherd Dog has a strong sense of smell and loves to have a job to do, so it is important to keep him engaged in activities that will keep his mind fresh and keep boredom at bay.

The German Shepherd Dog originated in Germany at the end of the 19th century. Captain Max von Stephanitz and other canine enthusiasts developed this breed from several other herding breeds. The German Shepherd Dog came to the United States around 1907 and is one of the most popular breeds in this country.

Present Status

The German Shepherd Dog is consistently ranked among the top three most popular dogs in the country. There are many rescue groups and organizations dedicated to preserving the breed. German Shepherd Dogs are also used heavily in military and police work, as they are hard workers and have a keen sense of smell.
